Markland Community History

The inspiration for the Markland Manor House in St. Augustine.

The Manor House

The Markland Manor House was inspired by the Markland House in nearby St. Augustine. A classic Greek Revival home built in 1839 by the Anderson family, the Markland House sits on the National Register of Historic Places and is a long-standing symbol of St. Augustine hospitality and tradition. The Wolfe family, who sold the house to Flagler College in 1967, also owned the land upon which this community was built, so ties to the original Markland are strong.

Dr. Andrew Anderson

Andrew Anderson first built Markland Cottage in 1839 as the center of one of the largest orange groves in the United States.

Dr. Andrew Anderson returned to Markland after attending Medical School in New York shortly after the Civil War. By 1870, St. Augustine had become the a center for convalescence on the east coast. Long a benefactor to the city of St Augustine. Dr. Andrew Anderson donated both a life size statue of Ponce de León.and marble lions at the base of the Bridge of Lions to the City of St. Augustine.
